Now on to our short but fun science experiment

I’m sure you have at some stage in your life been confronted with the problem of finding out whether an egg is still raw or whether it is hard boiled. Imagine your boiled egg getting mixed up with the raw ones by mistake! How on earth are you going to find your boiled egg? Fortunately for you there is a very easy way, you simply have to spin the eggs!

This is what you have to do:

1. Spin each egg and note what happens. Now touch each spinning egg lightly and carefully observe what happens. You’ll notice that most of the eggs will wobble but one will spin. This resolves your problem as the spinner is the hard boiled egg. But why?

2. Now lightly touch the spinning egg and observe what happens. Do the same with the wobbling eggs. What happens?

You’ll notice that when you touch the spinning egg it stops spinning but when you touch the wobbling eggs they move again after you tried to stop them. Do you have any idea why this happens?

Here we have to learn a scientific term: inertia. The Oxford dictionary defines it as: ”A tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged.

This is what is causing the raw eggs to continue wobbling. In the raw eggs the loose yolks and whites revolve slowly because of inertia and even when you try to stop them, they continue. In the hard boiled egg, the solid white and solid yolk responds better to your effort to stop it.

In a later article we will do another elementary science fair project involving eggs.
